A BOOK BY THE ELDEST OF THE FOX SISTERS

Ann Leah Underhill (1814-1890) was eldest of the Fox sisters whose reports of spirit "rappings" launched the Spiritualist movement in the 19th century; Leah was the manager of her two younger sisters (the next-older sister Margaret ultimately confessed in 1888---before this book was written---to bogus "manifestations").

As her sisters' rappings became known, "Many of our visitors were anxious to learn, through the Spirits, how to make a fortune. Some wished to know the secrets of others... some wanted to know what numbers they should buy in a lottery, to be successful; others would wish to be advised in their stock speculations. To all such questions ready responses were given, but invariably ended in failures." (Pg. 52-53) After they engaged a hall to display their show, "Our career was now commenced. After all our resolving not to go any more before the public, we had been forced to let the world know what was revealed to us, and what was meant not for us alone." (Pg. 117) Later, she admits, "We received a good deal of money... but it was as freely spent as given. We, none of us, have ever been accused of the spirit of hoarding..." (Pg. 263-264)

She quotes a 1851 newspaper account which presciently stated, "the rappings... are produced by the action of the will, through voluntary action on the joints... the noises precisely identical with the 'spiritual rappings' may be produced in the knee joints." (Pg. 169) She indignantly replied to the paper, "we are very willing to undergo a proper and decent examination, provided we can select three male and three female friends who shall be present on the occasion." The examination was arranged, and "as we, Maggie and I, sat together on a sofe, and after long waiting no raps came, one of them rested his arm on the back of the sofa and actually, with his knuckles, made behind me three raps which were not a bad imitation." (Pg. 172-173) She recounts another test environment, when investigators concluded "the mediums have no more power over the sounds than the investigators have." (Pg. 259)

Regardless of one's opinion of the Fox sisters, this is must reading for anyone interested in the history of the Spiritualist movement.

Important primary source written in more difficult 19th century style

A primary source written by the eldest Fox sister, a founder of Modern Spiritualism. I gave this volume three stars because the writing style is more difficult for the 21st century reader than many other 19th century authors. I kept expecting to encounter the Lord Blackadder's 'contrafibularities,' his comedic attempt to out smart Dr. Johnson.

About the Author
After pursuing a degree in theoretical physics from Cambridge University, Ajahn Brahm, born in London as Peter Betts, headed off to a forest monastery in Thailand, where he studied under the famed meditation master Ajahn Chah for nine years starting in the mid 1970s. A Buddhist monk for over thirty years, he is now the abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia in Perth, and he is in demand worldwide both as a spiritual teacher and as a popular speaker. it is often funny, and sometimes ridiculous

From the mind of a Buddhist monk. It is an alternate way to look at the world around you. Told in 108 short stories, it is often funny, and sometimes ridiculous. I recommend for anyone looking for a quick read to lighten the mood.

A Fun, Joyous & Heart-Changing Ride!!!

Such a beautiful book, and such a joyous spirit!

Full Disclosure: I recently interviewed Ajahn Brahm for our Inspire Nation Show...I think he broke the laughter-per-minute quota!!!

What an amazing soul, and he shares fantastic story after story after story to help us 'get it'...and it's hard not to after reading his book. It's a treatise for life, wrapped up in short, bite-size, entertaining stories. Each one is it's own fortune cookie telling it's own tale, and it's own lesson.

It's hard not to get sucked into the stories, and then reflect them back to our own lives...which is exactly the point. He helps us realize the grandeur, the beauty, the silliness, the ease, and the difficulty that is all around us, and helps us learn how to let it all go, and to simply be in the moment.

In that sense, Don't Worry, Be Grumpy is a very powerful tool, wrapped up with a smile.

Excellent details

I realized that I really didn't know a lot about saddles and how they related to my horses. So when I saw this book and the fact that it was written by a DVM, I decided to try it. I was not a bit disappointed. The illustrations are very helpful and clear. The text is easy to understand and explains how each saddle part affects the horse and the possible problems that a bad fit or broken saddle can cause. You get good ideas of why your horse may misbehave while under saddle and how that relates to saddle fit. The book goes into some descriptions of saddle pads, but could be expanded. I was disappointed that girths aren't really covered. For the money, this is one of the best books in my library, to date.

Dr. Harman's book is worth its weight in gold for anyone considering buying a new saddle, or needing to evaluate the saddle they already have. She writes in a clear, easy-to-understand way about all aspects of saddles: their construction, how to evaluate fit for the horse AND the rider,where to find saddles,and selecting saddle pads. Her pictures illustrate and enhance the text. I'm very glad that I've added this book to my library.

Beauchamp covers a lot of ground

This is a required text for an undergraduate level business ethics class. I was pleased with the condition of the book. It had not been written in or high-lighted. I will probably use it for reference in the future. It's content is very comprehensive.

It's the text book of California Southern University MBA course. The contents are comprehensive.

I bought a used book in Amazon. It was very cheap. A new one is about $130. I bought the used one at about $10. I live in Seoul, South Korea. So overseas parcel service fee was about $30. I paid only $40 for this. Wow, what a deal!

And it took only 4~5 days to deliver it to me from USA to South Korea. How amazing! I felt as if I lived in USA.

The book was used, but it's in great shape. Very good!

Test and Measurement Bible

This books stands heads and shoulders above anything else written so far on the test and measurement of fiber optic systems and components. The other reviewers have given details about the books content, so I'll say why I liked the book.
Two main reasons: 1) The authors go into detail regarding how different instruments work from physical principles. Such an understanding is useful in understanding a device's (and measurement's) accuracy and validity.
2) The practical tips and explanations on how to make measurement alone make this an essential reference. This book neatly compliments theoretical books and papers by explaining how the typical measurements you may read about in a journal article are made and the underlying issues that contribute/take away from a measurement's efficacy/accuracy.
Some of my colleagues say that because this book was written by HP people and the examples shown involve HP instruments, this book loses some value. If so, this loss is miniscule.
Most photonic test instruments, HP or not, work on more or less the same principles. Whether or not you own HP instruments, you will find this book an invaluable reference.

Everything you need to know about photonic T&M

This is probably the most complete, accurate, and authoritative book I've seen that is devoted specifically to the science of testing fiber-optic systems and components.
The book begins by reviewing basic fiber-optic communications systems. It summarizes basic ideas in communications theory, characteristics of optical fiber, optical amplifiers, optical repeaters, O/E converters, and wavelength-division multiplexing. The first chapter also contains some useful background information about bit-error rates and waveform analysis. There are simple descriptions of multimode fiber, and basic explanations of things like numerical aperture, chromatic dispersion, and polarization characteristics of optical fiber. There is also some review material on active components such as Fabry-Perot lasers, distributed-feedback lasers, vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers, electrooptic modulators, and LEDs. The first chapter ends with a review of time and frequency measurements in photonic networks.
The material in the first chapter is pretty broad, and some of it is rather shallow. It's not really a good place to go for a primer on photonic networks, but the first chapter does help the reader review key concepts and ideas that are important in the book's later developments.
With the review completed, the book launches into detailed discussions about different types of measurements made in fiber-optic networks and on fiber-optic components. Generally, each chapter deals with a separate topic, and is written by a different author.
Chapter two discusses the nuances of making optical power measurements. While some may think that such measurements are trivial, Christian Hentschel (the author of chapter 2) does an excellent job of illustrating the precise engineering needed to make the most accurate measurements of optical power. Topics covered include temperature effects, spatial effects, noise, reflectivity, and compatibility with various fiber and connector types.
Chapter three is of special interest to anyone working in the field of wavelength-division multiplexing, as it's subject matter deals with optical spectrum analysis. A common theme throughout this book is to describe many of the different ways in which measurements can be performed. True to that theme, Joachim Vobis and Dennis Derickson (the authors of chapter 3) review the various ways in which spectral analysis can be performed. These include tunable filters like the Fabry-Perot interferometers as well as diffraction-based OSAs. The authors clearly prefer the grating OSA, and most of the chapter deals with specific nuances that must be considered in making such and instrument perform properly. Chapter four is similar to chapter three - it deals also with optical spectrum analysis. Chapter four, though, is devoted exclusively to the subject of wavelength meters that make spectral measurements using a Michelson interferometer and stabilized internal light source.
Chapter five covers high-resolution optical frequency analysis. Chapter 6 deals with polarization measurements, including a review of the Jones calculus and a nice explanation and description of the Stokes parameters and Poincare sphere. Chapter 7 describes intensity modulation and noise characterization of optical signals. Chapter 8 covers analysis of digital modulation on optical carriers, including some nice material on bit-error rates, eye-diagram analysis, mask measurements, and jitter analysis. Chapter 9 has some good information on insertion-loss measurements (another of those underestimated problems). Chapter 10 has a good review of optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs) used in testing components, while chapter 11 explains the use of OTDRs in making measurements on optical fiber. Chapter 12 covers dispersion measurements, including both chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion. The last chapter explains the tests used to characterize erbium-doped optical fibers (EDFAs). This last chapter, especially, is well worth reading, though I found some of the test descriptions a little hard to follow.
The book ends with three very useful appendices. Appendix A is devoted to noise sources in optical measurements, appendix B to nonlinear limits for optical measurements (a must for anyone working with DWDM systems) and appendix C has some practical information regarding the care of optical connectors.
The book covers a tremendous amount of information. Its 642 pages are jam packed with just about everything you ever wanted to know about photonic test and measurement. And what it does not cover is usually described in excruciating detail in the complete list of references at the end of each chapter.
There are plenty of equations, but not much mathematical derivation. If you are up on your algebra and calculus you will have no difficulty following anything in this book. Its aim is practicality, and I'd say it hit a bull's eye.
The illustrations are done nicely; the explanations are (for the most part) clean, crisp, and concise. This is an excellent book that I highly recommend. I've marked it with yellow pen, dog-eared the corners of the pages, scribbled in the margins, spilt my drink on it at least once, broken the spine, and basically beat it to pieces. That's what you do with the really useful tools - the rest of them just sit on the shelf looking pretty and collecting dust.
If you make your living testing photonic systems, you really owe it to yourself to get and read this book.

Best First Aid Manual I have ever owned.

I have looked through many first aid manuals....Even invested in some. Between
an EMT training manual being a 10 compared to another type of manual which
has few pictures and less that adequate helpful information....this one would
definitely be an 8. Great colored pictures on each page..Step by step using
real pictures. Also the information covered....anything from bruises to head
trauma are covered What YOU as a non professional can do to mitigate
a situation. Also what items you need to have on hand and how to use them..
and why. Great book. Have not seen one better for the price..unless you want
to spend the big bucks for an EMT manual ..which would probably too much
information.

A good first aid manual for non-medical people

After having looked at a lot of books to have on hand for family members to use in case of an emergency, I finally decided on this one. Written for the non-medical person, it has lots of photos and diagrams, is clearly and simply written, and can be easily used in an emergency. I know that I may not always be present when first aid is needed, and it's nice to know that this simple guide will help my family know what to do. It would have been nice if the book went into more detail about some of the more difficult techniques for worse injuries or illnesses, but I am happy that it covers the simple first aid things well.

it's really quite good. And up to date

Well, it's DK so there are lots of pictures. Being as it's a first aid manual and not an EMT textbook, it's really quite good. And up to date. Kind of "first response for the rest of us." Clear explanations of many things, many of which aren't obvious. And free of some obvious things that are nonetheless in other, similar books (for example, "don't start CPR on someone who's been decapitated"). A little big/heavy for the average disaster-prep medic kit or auto kit, though, if that's what you want. Highly recommended.

Very good general driving text, no info on Police driving however

This book functions as what most Americans would consider a Drivers Ed. text book. It is a very good one, but it is specific to the UK (which side of the road is driven on, signs, etc). It goes into much greater detail on the physics of a vehicle in motion then most texts of the sort would do, and does a good job of explaining this material. The book does not have any information relating to high speed or pursuit driving, and states that these are subjects best learned with an instructor. As a general text about driving it's a 5 star book, those looking for information about police driving (as I was) look else where such as Bob Bondurant on Police and Pursuit Driving.
