Amazon.com Review
Covering over 400 of them, The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems is a vital reference resource not only for the serious scholar of writing but for anyone with a passing interest in the history of writing. Sociolinguist Florian Coulmas, editor of The Handbook of Sociolinguistics and associate editor of The International Journal of the Sociology of Language, draws on disciplines ranging from psychology to epigraphy to present a work that is both far-reaching in its scope and deep enough to be of interest to serious theorists.

The encyclopedia itself consists of articles and entries of various lengths, all laid out in a typical A-to-Z format, with copious cross-referencing providing a wealth of threads for the inveterate browser. The entries themselves range from short definitions of concepts to longer articles on more complex topics, such as morphogenesis (the idea that all writing can be traced back to a single system), orthographic reform, and dyslexia. Over 400 figures and 1,600 tables illustrate not only the world's orthographies but also such things as the Mormon alphabet, the elements comprising Mayan logograms (written signs representing whole words), and Babylonian clay tablets. All this, plus a comprehensive bibliography, makes The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems an indispensable reference work for scholars and a thoroughly enjoyable browse for anyone interested in human communication.

From Library Journal
Nearly 80 international scholars, the editors among them, have contributed entries in The World's Writing Systems covering all scripts officially used throughout the world as well as their historical origins, each with an extensive bibliography. Included are tables of alphabets and syllabaries as well as script samples, usually featuring transliteration, transcription, and gloss of the text. The essays are grouped by topics, but a detailed index guides the user to specific terms or languages desired. There is even a section with entries treating notation systems used for music and movement. The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems is arranged in dictionary format without an index, but with a substantial bibliography. Coulmas's (Writing Systems of the World, Blackwell, 1989) coverage is not nearly as comprehensive as the Oxford publication. In the article on the Cree Syllabary all scripts are mentioned, but tables are not provided for Inuktitut (Inuit language) or Chipewyan. "Gothic" script is discussed with only incidental reference to the term Fraktur, for which an interesting history is provided in the Oxford work. This, however, does not mean that the Coulmas encyclopedia is not a useful reference tool. Both publications are recommended for most reference collections, but The World's Writing Systems is clearly the more technically detailed. The determining factors for purchase will be price and needs of library clientele. There is a third choice for public or school libraries with limited resources: Akira Nakanishi's Writing Systems of the World (Tuttle, 1980). This inexpensive (pap. $14.95) ready-reference tool concentrates on modern languages and their scripts, with examples from newspapers, a color map of world writing systems, an index, and a bibliography.?Edward K. P.G. Patel, University of Ottawa

" A good work of this kind is an indispensible reference tool for the student or scholar of writing systems...C's encyclopedia does an excellent job of presenting hundreds of terms used in the analysis of writing systems...It does so... in prose of clarity that makes each entry a pleasure to read." A fascinating vademecum
By S. Gustafson
This is the only book that I have yet found that compares to David Diringer's -The Alphabet: A Key to the History of Mankind-.

It is not quite so complete in its coverage of obscure scripts as Diringer, and it makes far fewer attempts to analyse the history of the scripts. On the other hand, because it covers less such territory, the exemplars of the scripts and the tables of the characters and their values in this book are far more legible. The alphabetic arrangement of the material makes it easy to find which system you want.

Another of this book's strengths is that at least some attempt is made to explain how the phonemes of the many languages are expressed by the scripts in question; in many languages, from Tibetan to English, the relationship between alphabet and speech is subtle and complex. Obviously, this information will be cursory and incomplete, but having some is better than having none, and it is at least handy to know whether you are dealing with phonemic or with etymological spellings. This will help you not only to transliterate, but also to read, them.

If you are fascinated by the history of writing, and obscure scripts and arcane alphabets, you NEED this book, and will spend hours leafing through it.

Not Quite the Best
By E. Crapo
After reading previous reviews, I was excited about flipping through my own copy of the encyclopedia; however, I quickly became disappointed. For all the work and study that went into the production of the book, there is no doubt to its value to the linguistic community; however, keep the following points in mind: 1) the entry on the Anglo Saxon alphabet contradicts itself (identifying 25 letters in the text, but showing a different set of 25 letters, demonstrating 26 in total). 2) The entry on the misnamed "Mormon Alphabet" is appalling--those who used it over a century ago called it the Deseret Alphabet; and it's creation was commissioned by Brigham Young in the 1840s--it was not reveled to Joseph Smith on Gold Plates in the 1830; to claim such shows marked assumptions of the author based solely on previously-known knowledge of the sect.

Furthermore, the Figures and table are of photocopies quality, some of the characters so small that distinction between them cannot be easily recognized. Nor do the tables of alphabets line up with their entries. Nor are the tables uniform, but seem to be cut-and-paste tables from other sources.

The text has value, but some of the scholarship is dubious, and the graphic presentation is shambles.

Great overview of a fascinating tpic
By David G. Durand
This book is a great starting place for people who are interesting in the many ways people have encoded language by means of writing. The descriptions of most systems are complete enough that one can get a real feel for how they work (if not perhaps all the details of the most complex systems). It also includes brief articles on topics such as calligraphy, the status of alphabetic writing versus other systems, and the like. While some of these are subjects of heated scholarly debate, Coulmas provides balanced explanations of the issues.A wonderful overview of the intricate and beautiful ways people write the world over.Other books that would interest readers of this are:"The World's Writing Systems" from Oxford University Press is the best single reference for complete descriptions of scripts. But at nearly [$$$] in hardcover, it's relatively inaccessible to the general reader. It's also targeted to a more professional audience and is not as good for browsing around. As an anthology of articles by experts it is both more authoritative, and a bit more uneven than Coulmas."Writing Systems: A Linguistic Introduction" by Geoffrey Sampsonis more of a discussion of the issues raised for linguistics by a variety of writing systems. Sampson's book includes a detailed discussion of the Chinese system.

Amazon.com Review
"All children, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children's literature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because the tale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashed up, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is also witty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but they also happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of such throwaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberately obscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and "pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relatively innocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed more safely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of its children's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligence that are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with the dastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... a little bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects: "This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form." A book for adult readers-aloud to revel in--and it just might teach young listeners to fly. (Ages 5 and older) --Richard Farr

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-J. M. Barrie's classic tale comes to life in this radio play adaptation. Young listeners will once again be thrilled with the antics of Peter, Wendy, Michael, the Lost Boy, Captain Hook, and Tinkerbell. The voices of the children and adult actors are well suited to the story. There are a few places where the dialogue is a little fuzzy, but overall the audio quality is very clear. Following the original tale closely, this radio play is a refreshing change from traditional books on tape and will provide pleasurable listening for young readers. Teachers may want to use it as anexample for expressive reading and acting techniques. A unique selection to add to audio collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
An unusually large, attractive, unabridged edition with dozens of full-page illustrations and smaller vignettes. In style, Gustafson's lusty oil paintings of the pirates are akin to N. C. Wyeth's, though they have more the flavor of compelling dramatic play than real menace. His slim, round-faced, rosy children and cozy interiors are closer to Wyeth's gifted student, Jessie Wilcox Smith, while the ethereal yet mischievous fairy folk recall Rackham. This is not to suggest that the result is merely derivative, in the manner of Michael Hague; Gustafson is a talented craftsman who skillfully melds his references to past greats to create an appropriately traditional style that has enough of a contemporary aura (especially in the characterizations) for broad popular appeal. An endpaper map of ``The Neverland'' and meticulous renditions of intriguing details add to the drama and fun. A perfect gift for a family that reads aloud. A Neat Package
By theboombody
Hmm...., Peter and Wendy is obviously a five star book all the way, but what about Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens? Well, it's not really a complete book, first off. It's just a large section taken out of an earlier Barrie book titled The Little White Bird. So its very fragmented. Second, since it's more of a springboard the for ideas that formed the Peter Pan play than anything else, it repeats quite a bit of what we have already seen multiple times in many of the famous Peter Pan adaptations.

Even so, I did get a lot of enjoyment out of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Aside from the first chapter (which isn't much fun if you haven't been to the gardens), I was quite entertained. Barrie's theory that people are born as birds and then turn into humans afterward is pretty wild, and I loved Peter's interaction with the girl who was captured by the fairies. Peter thought he played games the same way all real boys did but just embarassed the heck out of himself, throwing the hula-hoops or whatever those things were in the water. Poor guy.

So all in all, you have a great introduction followed by a good book fragment and topped off with an all-time classic. Not a bad purchase at all.

Why Classics are Classics
By theboombody
As one reads Peter Pan, one doesn't have to do much thinking to figure out why its story has achieved such worldwide acclaim. I had ridiculously high expectations of Mr. Barrie's imagination before purchasing this title, and he has fulfilled them completely.

Many parts of the story are nothing but nonsense, which I enjoy above all else. Mr. Darling, the head of the Darling family, commands his children to take their medicine after he hides the medicine he's supposed to take. He brags about how noble he is for drinking a medicine that tastes so much worse that theirs. Unfortunately for him, during his bragging his medicine is found, and the whole family agrees to take their respective medicines on the count of three. Sure enough, when three is reached, everyone except Mr. Darling takes their medicine, and Mr. Darling once again tries to hide his.

This kind of scenario is what I'd call Mark Twain nonsense. You can imagine it being true, even though it's quite high up on the ridiculous scale. Then there's what I would classify as over-the-top nonsense - AKA bull - which there is plenty of in Barrie's original story of Peter Pan. Going back to Mr. Darling, if we take a look at how he's doing near the end of the book, we find him going to and from work in a dog kennel. Ah, yes...grown men in pet taxis. What could be more fun than the "he-didn't-even-try-to-make-this-belivable" silliness of such a scene? To be honest, I don't know if I'd even read books if they all left out fun stuff like this.

Other silly parts of the book involve Wendy growing up a day quicker than most girls; the narrator claiming he hates Mrs. Darling only to call her his favorite character a few sentences later; the lost boys asking Wendy to change the characters her story just two sentences into it; the narrator using the phrase "woke into life" because Peter likes the word "woke" more than "wakened;" and my favorite, Captain Hook using a stale cake as a missle and then falling over it in the dark.

I believe the novel version of Peter Pan was written after the author had already established Peter Pan as a successful play. That may explain a lot about the colorful narration, which takes many, many literary liberties. We see everything from blatant narrator interference with the characters in the story to the shameless attempt at informing the audience that the narrator only chooses to make the events in the story happen a certain way so certain characters in the book won't be disappointed. Perhaps without these wacky (and maybe even insane) traits in the narration, there'd be no reason to read the book, since it would be no different from the play. After reading the Peter Pan novel though, I'd have to say it almost seems criminal to watch an adaptation of Peter Pan without any wacky narration.

Contrary to most adaptations of Peter Pan, the individual lost boys (of where there are six I believe) are actually more developed as characters than John or Michael Darling. Heck, at the end of the book they actually end up moving out of the Neverland to live with the Darlings and grow up to busy themselves in interesting professions.

I may not like the actual land of Neverland as much as I like the land of Oz, but Barrie's narration is unbeatable in my opinion. He could probably make a Jeopardy contestant's Friday night schedule sound exciting.

I believe Barrie has written another Peter Pan book as well, a prequel of sorts entitled "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens." It should be interesting, particuarly if it addresses what is contained in the dark dreams that haunt Peter throughout this book. Freud would have a field day with such dreams and the whole mother issue.

The only thing I expected to see in this book that I didn't see was "happy thoughts." That must have been a creation of Disney.

The Unveiling of Jesus Christ, by T. Austin-Sparks

At the beginning of the Book of the Revelation, we find, on the one hand, a situation of spiritual loss and failure, weakness, and many other conditions and features which even the Lord Himself, in all His grace, has to deplore... It was a time when Christians both actually needed real help and stimulus, and needed to be prepared for further battles, further conflicts and further sufferings. These were the two main aspects of the general situation.

In the light of those facts, we stand back and ask: How did the Lord, and how does the Lord, meet that need? Indeed, we might say: How does the Lord ever meet a great need? What is that which alone will supply the need, and be the key to the problem, the answer to the demand, and the assured ground, both of recovery and renewal, and of fortification for the suffering? And the answer has ever been, and always is: A new revelation - an unveiling - of the greatness of Jesus Christ. That is the very platform, we might say, upon which and from which the Lord moves into these situations, and into all the situations that follow in this book. He prefaces everything with this fresh revelation or unveiling of His own personal greatness.

About the Author
Gary Plowman is an Indie Game Developer and Web Developer with a passion for retro computing and retrogaming. This book covers coding fun arcade games in BASIC. The book has been used at STEM events and kids coding seminars across UK & Europe. Teachers have also used the book for introducing game coding to kids in the classroom. In the 1980s computer magazines were bought for their Type-In games by eager young teenagers looking to decipher the mysteries of early microcomputers. The Type-in listings were very important as a first step to learning the coding language of a machine and allowed kids and teenagers to pick up the concepts as they typed in a listing for a game or utility. This book tries to recreate that feeling but in a more structured and user-friendly way and provides a breakdown of the key concepts such as game loops, collision detection, game play improvements and suggestions for further enhancing the games. The book has been bought and used by teachers, STEM facilitators, ZX Spectrum fans, Commodore 64 & Amiga owners too! Sinclair BASIC is a fun and simple language but very productive and capable for learning the basics of computer coding.

Typical illustrations include a photo of a pile of amputated feet, four pages of clinical portraits of maimed soldiers, photos of nurses at work in hospitals and rare studio portraits of slaves among some 500 illustrations which, in combination with the text, present a memorable record of the War Between the States. The book, assembled by Ward, author of A First Class Temperament: The Emergence of Franklin Roosevelt , and historians Ken and Ric Burns, also includes original essays by distinguished historians James M. McPherson and C. Vann Woodward among others, and an edifying interview with historian Shelby Foote.

Scam Artist
By Internal Conquest
I can give you a summary of the book aka the real story of how this company was created.

Darren wants to start an insurance agency. So he applies for a business license and employs immigrants seeking work visas. The immigrants know that their work visa is contingent upon their employment and they are willing to do whatever it takes to stay in the country, as long as it is not illegal. Darren instructs the immigrants to tell every new employee that they hire that they are making close to a six figure incomes in three years, and that this was accomplished by following Darren's business model and sales script. Since lying to college students is not illegal, the immigrants go along with it. Next Darren holds group hiring sessions to quickly recruit recent college graduates. These college graduates are instructed to cold call 8 hours a day to prospect small businesses that want to switch insurance agents. Any appointments booked by the recent college grads are attended by Darren or one of the immigrants. During the appointment, they will tell you that they can save you 22% on your insurance premiums by switching brokers. What they really mean is that they'll downgrade your plan so you receive less benefits and pay lower premiums. It's nothing ground breaking, but when you have dozens of college students cold calling local businesses 8 hours a day, you eventually find some people who are willing to switch brokers. It's a number game.

Many college grads stick around for months, sometimes even years before finally realizing that Darren never had any intent on sharing the full commission that he promised. He only shares commission with the immigrants so that they can uphold the image of success and one or two females that he befriends. Eventually the college grads realize that this is a sham, they inevitable search for new work and Darren keeps the accounts and commission to himself. Repeat this cycle after almost a decade and now Darren is rich because literally hundreds, possibly up to a thousand college graduates, have worked for months at a time making cold calls to prospect small businesses, only to leave those accounts behind.

Want proof? Here's a link to when Darren started applying to get employees on work visas from myvisajobs.
myvisajobs(dot)com/Visa-Sponsor/Apex-Outsourcing-Insurance/693690_Visa(dot)htm
Two of the originally employees on work visas are Scott Boyd and George Mihov shown in this video.
youtube(dot)com/watch?v=fYmUDNTvPdE

The first employee is Scott Boyd, he is ethnically caucasian but he had an Indonesia citizenship.
He received his degree from Jakarta. Here's proof from his own linkedin website.
linkedin(dot)com/pub/scott-boyd/12/534/72b

The second employee in this video is George Mihov, from Bulgaria. Here's proof from his company bio on united AMG website.
unitedamgpartners(dot)com/about-us(dot)html

Now here's proof that he uses college grads for free labor. These reviews are written from his former employees from Glass Door website who confirm that he's using recent college grads as a source of free labor.
glassdoor(dot)com/Reviews/Apex-Outsourcing-Reviews-E227457(dot)htm
The reviews are self explanatory.

Darren operates the same company under three different names to create the illusion of growth and diversity.
These companies are:
Apex Broker
UnitedAMG
DaVincifinancial

If you view the contact page on each website, they all have the same address in Irvine, CA. He's trying to create the illusion of success and wealth.

While this guy might not be breaking any laws, he is as shady as they come. He'll tell say things like, "there's enough businesses in a 10 miles radius to support all the new brokers", "if you stick with his program for three years, you'll make it too, but it's a tough job and not everyone is cut out to work on commission because some people just don't have what it takes". He's basically using reverse psychology on you to get you to think you need to work hard for free if you want to make it and if you don't, it's your own damn fault.

The truth is, there is no merit system in which the employees are promoted to ever receive commission. You only believe it is possible to achieve a reasonable income through this system because the immigrants parrot this lie to you. In truth, Darren just gives out just enough commission to sustain the illusion and keeps the rest for himself. As a real agent, you can get signed up by any health care provider on your own and collect 100% of the commission yourself from day one. As a new agent, you sometimes split commission and earn a draw during the training process. At APEX - you work for free and sign all your accounts under Darren's name.

He's been pulling the same trick on college students for almost a decade now. His ploy has probably evolved over time, but here's the real story behind Apex. The fact that he's even written a book to white wash his history is actually a smart move but it's also rather disgusting at the same time.

If Amazon continues to sell this book, I hope they re-categorize this to the appropriate section - "Fiction".

Inspiring ... far more compelling than I expected
By Priestington Insurance Services
This is one of the few books in recent memory that I actually enjoyed reading. I generally have pretty low expectations for books of this genre, but the combination of insightful advice and real world applicability gave this book a certain legitimacy and usefulness I've found similar titles lacking.

I've already put several of the strategies in this book into practice in my own life, and have been pleasantly surprised by the results. To be fair, I have a background in insurance that makes this book especially relevant for me, but this text has so much useful information that anyone who wants to build a better company or even just learn more about what it takes to be successful will get a lot out of this book.

Amazing Legacy in Action
By Jillian
This book embarked the beginning of a legacy being built by Darren Sugiyama and his team. Purchased in bulk by a multi-billion dollar company, I've had the pleasure of not only reading, but actually experiencing the training behind the story with the author himself. While my agency operates in a different fashion (as many do)the lesson has been engrained and our sales have continued to rise steadily year over year. I highly encourage to start with this read, then move to the next chapter, The Icon Effect.
