So enduring is the reputation of Marie Curie that more than 100 years after she won her first Nobel Prize, for physics in 1903 (she won a second, for chemistry, in 1911), Curie (1867–1934) is still regarded by most as the pre-eminent woman scientist of the 20th century. Goldsmith's straightforward biography illuminates both the public Curie, a tireless scientist obsessed with work, and the private one, a woman who suffered bouts of severe depression, was distant from her children and scarred deeply by the accidental death of her scientist husband, Pierre, in 1906. Using long-sealed Curie family archives, Goldsmith offers a well-rounded view of her subject that makes good dramatic use of the considerable intrigue that surrounded Curie's scientific accomplishments and her private life. Goldsmith also reminds us, without belaboring the point, that Curie overcame obstacles, including pervasive sexism within the scientific community that almost cost her the Nobel. Goldsmith is also adept at demonstrating that for Curie the nexus of public accomplishments and private happiness was tenuous. Although Curie continued working after Pierre's death, Goldsmith says she never allowed his name to be spoken: "Never again would there be a sign of joy." Mediocre

I'm working on a project about Curie, so I've read several biographies about her thus far. This book isn't absolutely terrible, but I think it handles Curie poorly. It underexplains much about her life and motivations, gives little due to the science behind her work, and goes out of its way to make her "inner world" excessively dramatic. Curie's story is amazing and fascinating, but this book sacrifices explanatory detail and historical context in favor of an emotionally simplified (and thus more boring) version of the person. Even the title is misleading -- Curie was dedicated to her work and slightly reclusive, but she was hardly an obsessive personality.

I encourage you to please check out the longer but much more engrossing biography by Susan Quinn (titled Marie Curie: A Life (Radcliffe Biography Series)), which provides the historical and scientific context necesssary to make Curie's story really come alive.

A Fascinating Biography

Obsessive Genius is an utterly fascinating portrait of a hallowed and difficult subject. If you are a fan of Goldsmith's work, (I am) you will immediately see that she is the perfect person to give Curie the complexity and dimension she deserves --as a scientist and as a woman. It's a short book which is by turns moving, informative, and intriguingly unexpected. I couldn't put it down.

Captivating

I learned of this book in the magazine section of my Sunday newspaper. I strongly doubted that a nonfiction book would be able to hold my interest for long as they can be so dry and tedious, but the topic sounded interesting, the review was promising and as I am a huge historical fiction reader I thought it might be worth a try. I am so grateful that I ran across that recommendation or I would have missed out on a real gem!

The story grabbed me in right from page one. I couldn't wait to find some free time to be able to get back to reading! While definitely written as nonfiction, the story at times reads like a simple novel with short dialogue, letter excerpts and diary entries. These personal touches add a wonderful element to the book. The scientific explanations were presented very simplistically and were easy enough to understand. They too, added a wonderful and important element to the story.

Marie Curie's life was fascinating: a woman of rare intelligence and genius, she was also plagued by severe depression (especially after the loss of her beloved Pierre) and faced the constant struggle to prove herself and receive her much deserved credit in what was a very male-dominated field. Yet despite these struggles, her devotion to science and her world-changing discoveries never diminished; they enveloped her very soul. I must admit that at times, when reading about her accomplishments and the ease at which science came to her, I felt alittle inadequate and less than intelligent. She was an inspiration!

I was very happy to discover the wonderful coincidence that while I was reading this book, the anniversary of Marie Curie's discovery of radium and radioactivity took place. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in science, history, women's rights, medicine or just plain life!

About the Author

Philip B. Bedient is the Herman Brown Professor of Engineering, with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rice University, Houston, TX. He received the Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering sciences from the University of Florida. He is a registered professional engineer and teaches and performs research in surface hydrology, modeling, and flood prediction systems, and ground water hydrology. He has directed over 50 research projects over the past 31 years, and has written over 180 journal articles and conference proceedings over that time. He has also written four textbooks in the area of surface and groundwater hydrology. He received the Shell Distinguished Chair in environmental science (1988–92), the C.V. Theis award in 2007, and he was elected Fellow of ASCE in 2006. Dr. Bedient has worked on a variety of hydrologic problems, including river basin analyses, major floodplain studies, groundwater contamination models, and hydrologic/GIS models in water resources. He has been actively involved in developing computer systems for flood prediction and warning, and recently directed the development of a real-time flood alert system (FAS2) for the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston. The FAS2 is based on converting NEXRAD radar data directly to rainfall in a GIS framework, which is then used to predict peak channel flows. Dr. Bedient is organizing the Houston test bed for the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA), an NSF Engineering Research Center led by University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and Rice University is a strategic outreach partners. CASA’s revolutionary sensing technology is expected to increase the warning time for flash floods and other severe weather events with greater accuracy than existing systems. The first high technology radar was deployed in 2007 in the TMC in Houston as part of the on-going flood warning system developed for the Texas Medical Center. Dr. Bedient has overseen the monitoring, modeling, and remediation at numerous hazardous waste sites, including six Superfund sites, and U.S. Air Force bases in five states. He has extensive experience in contaminant transport at sites impacted with chlorinated solvents and fuels. He has served on two National Academy of Science committees relating to environmental remediation and technology, and has received research funding from NSF, the U.S. EPA, the U.S. Department of Defense, the State of Texas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the City of Houston.

Wayne C. Huber is Professor of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University, Corvallis. His doctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology dealt with thermal stratification in reservoirs, for which he received the Lorenz G. Straub Award from the University of Minnesota and the Hilgard Hydraulic Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is a member of several technical societies and has served several administrative functions within the ASCE. He is the author of over 120 reports and technical papers, is a registered professional engineer, and has served as a consultant on numerous studies done by public agencies and private engineering firms. Beginning at the University of Florida and continuing at Oregon State University, Dr. Huber’s research has included studies of urban hydrology, Storm water management, nonpoint source runoff, river basin hydrology, lake eutrophication, rainfall statistics, and hydrologic and water quality modeling. He is one of the original authors of the EPA Storm Water Management Model and has helped to maintain and improve the model continuously since 1971. Dr. Huber is an internationally recognized authority on runoff quantity and quality processes in urban areas.

Baxter E. Vieux is Director of the Natural Hazards and Disaster Research Center and Professor in the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science, University of Oklahoma, Norman where he teaches courses in hydrology, GIS, surveying, measurements, water quality management, and engineering graphics and design. Before joining OU in 1990, he held a professorship at Michigan State University teaching watershed management after earning his PhD there. Dr. Vieux was recently appointed as Adjunct Professor with the Department of Environmental Engineering and Science, Rice University, Houston, Prior to his academic career, he spent ten years with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service serving as Acting State Engineer, and being responsible for statewide engineering design and construction programs in Michigan. He is a registered professional engineer in three states and is co-principal and founder of Vieux & Associates, Inc., an engineering technology company with clients in the US and internationally in radar rainfall, GIS, and hydrology. Dr. Vieux is the innovator and architect of the first commercially available physics-based distributed hydrologic model, Vflo™, which uses real-time radar inputs for hydrologic analysis and prediction. Span urban and rural hydrology, the model has worldwide applicability. A patent is held for a method of realtime distributed model calibration. Consultative services include major corporations and engineering companies, and domestic and international water agencies. Externally sponsored academic research has been funded by NASA, EPA, NWS, NOAA, Army Corps of Engineers, NSF, and state/local agencies. Internationally, he has conducted research and worked on projects in France, Japan, Poland, Niger, Nicaragua, Taiwan, Paraguay, Korea and Romania. He has authored over 110 publications in hydrology including a recent book in its second edition, Distributed Hydrologic Modeling Using GIS, Kluwer Academic Press,Vol. 48.

Comprehensive and detailed

I was required to purchase this book for an entry level hydrology class. Even now, I continually refer back to it as a reference in my graduate level classes. The book comprehensively introduces you to most aspects of hydrology and hydraulics, with examples and case studies that really reinforce the basics. Hang on to it after your class -- you'll find it's a super handy resource.

Useful for Students

My well-loved copy of this book has helped me though several courses and done so excellently. It has an even balance of theory and practical applications. For each topic there is usually a few paragraphs of explanation, then some formula derivations, then an example. The examples are critical, I have worked through almost all of them at this point and they are really helpful.

It is the correct book for my masters class, but I a week after I bought the book the pages started falling out, and the binding/pages separated from the cover. I would recommend spending the extra money to buy a better quality book. I will now have to spend close to $200 to buy another copy somewhere else.

Sunshine and chatty girl are a match made in heaven!

I simply adored this book ! The battle of wits between Gabriel Scott, aka Sunshine, and Sophie Darling, aka chatty girl, was total bliss! Sophie’s radiant and lively personality was in total contrast to Gabriel’s “Ice-Man” character. I enjoyed their interactions, their witty banter, the dynamics between them was so much fun! And frankly, I fell head over heels for these two irresistible characters.

Sophie works as a social media liaison, in charge of creative contents. She has been hired to help promote the biggest rock band in the world, managed by Gabriel. He is dedicated to the band, Jax, Killian, Whip and Rye are more than his long-time friends, they are his family. Gabriel is the picture perfect alpha hero, charismatic, in control and exacting. His kind of woman is quiet, dignified and discreet, definitely not Sophie’s temperament. In fact, they are perfect opposite. Sophie is a natural-born talker and a free spirit. She enjoys provoking and teasing him. He enjoys shocking her. Their relationship is complicated, but they have a natural connection that can’t be denied. I loved their interactions, the flirtation, the teasing and the realistic way their relationship progressed from cautious friendship to much deeper feelings.

Gabriel is convinced he has no capacity for relationships. But he needs Sophie to help him live for the moment. He lets her see his vulnerabilities, his loneliness. She brings him comfort and understanding. Together, they are a match made in heaven!

After reading Idol, the first installment in the VIP series, this book was one of my most anticipated read of the year. And it simply blew my mind! This is testament to Kristen Callihan’s masterful storytelling and characterization. "Managed" was such a great rollercoaster ride of emotions, perfect of sweetness and genuineness! I loved it and I can’t recommend it enough. Although it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. But I definitely recommend reading the whole series!

HAVE MERCY!!! This book was not just a great read, but it was an experience of epic proportions. Words cannot do it justice and neither does five stars. Some reviewers have said that it even tops 'Idol,' book one of the VIP Series, but my opinion differs. It would be an impossibility for me to choose between the two because it simply wouldn't be comparing apples to apples. In 'Idol' we meet and get to know Killian, the founder and leader of the band, Kill John. We see what he endures when his best friend and band-mate attempts suicide and the impact it has on each member and the band as a whole. We experience Killian crashing into Libby's life...and front yard...for the first time. It includes a lot of the band, concerts, the lifestyle rockers live and it was a learning experience, so many things I had not thought about.

In 'Managed' we are focused on the illusive band's manager, Gabriel Scott (aka Scottie.) He's a stuffy, British gentleman who is closed off with walls of concrete erected around his heart and soul. He opens himself up to no one. He doesn't do conversations or friendships, just gives orders to those he manages and lives a solitary life, sharing his space with no one. It's sad really and he didn't have such a great life growing up. On a flight back to England he is very unhappy his reservations were not as ordered and ends up sitting next to 'chatty girl' and is irked because she won't shut up. Sophie is a sweetheart and quite unique and bright. She has no idea who she's sitting next to and their banter is laugh out loud, wipe the tears away funny.

I love the nicknames the couples gave each other in both books. It's hilarious and sweet. But most of all you are in for a treat as these two people fight like heck the attraction that sizzles between them. It is a deeply touching love story and will have you unable to put this book down.

My favorite of the book:
“Madam, if this death trap of a conveyance were hurtling toward the Earth in a fiery ball of doom, and your mouth on my c*@& was the last bit of sex I’d ever have the chance to receive, I’d take off my seatbelt and throw myself toward death.”

The verbal sparring never stopped and it was hilarious. What an enjoyable, fantastic read. I highly recommend this book. You will so be missing out if you don't read this book. Reading pleasure is best when series is read in order.

Funny and steamy, just another great story form Kristen Callihan!

4,5 stars! I love this series. All characters are to fall in love with! Great story, damaged hero, smooth-tongued and funny heroine. What's not to love? Probably just the wait for the next book!

About the plot: It started with a flight from hell. Sophie Darling is flying to London for a job interview with a small amount of information for who she will be working. She is a photographer and works in social media. When she gets upgraded to first class, couldn't believe her luck. Until the moment she has to sit next to incredibly handsome and not so happy with the company suit wearing snob.

Gabriel Scott is a manager of the biggest rock band on the world, Kill John and he hates to fly. When the seat next to him instead of being empty is occupied he is ready to explode. But the long flight gets more and more interesting when annoying woman works as a great entertainment and distraction. Who would have thought that this is just the beginning.

My thoughts: When everyone has been waiting for a book about another member of the band, Kristen Callihan gave us a book about their manager. And guess what? It was a hit!

First of all the characters. Separately and together, totally amazing. Sophie is smart, sweet but also so goofy. Her inner monologues and banter with Scottie are highly entertaining and funny to tears. Gabriel Scott is a man of control, a professional, ambitious and keeps everybody at a distance. He also frequently deny himself what he wants. But under that whole crust is loving and devoted man.

Sophie and Gabriel are making very small steps to be together, you will have to be patient. But everything is wonderfully built and developed. They have a lot interactions and slowly burn with sexual tension. The waiting for the final shot will wore you out, but they are so good together, you will not regret it. You get caught in their story from the first pages to the last.

It was also good to be part of the band again and get to know even closer members of Kill John. You can be sure that you will find out what's new with Libby and Killian and the whole gang. They all enrich the story and I can't wait to read more books about them.

My favorite thing is as Gabriel said to Sophie, Darling. She doesn't know whether he uses it as her name or endearment, but you feel it immediately. This is adorable and sensational idea. And of course Sunshine, but that you'll have to read yourself. What I highly recommend.

Very Inspiring!!!

I love the way Andreas presents spirituality and how to tackle most common issues we face. It provides great insight and gives you simple rules to follow to achieve perfect health, abundance and spiritual wisdom. Andreas call it "Opening the 12 gateways" > create heaven on earth.

Inspirational beyond imagination!

After reading this book of true wisdom and knowledge I realised just how little we as humans know about the universe, life and ourselves. I also realised how useless our education system has been, what a waste of precious life and just how dumbed down our society really is. We live in a world bombarded by lies, deception and superficiality, when it need not be this way at all.

We think we know, but we know nothing! We think we are right, but in actual fact we are wrong. We believe those with titles behind their names know more than us but who really know very little themselves. Just as the Native American Indians understood and identified with the Great Spirit within and had direct contact with the spirits of the universe and all of nature, so this book will shift your thinking and make you realise life from a totally different dimension and angle. A life worth living and as it's so true title. It's time to come alive, it will make you come alive and live live as it should be lived. Abundantly, happily and healthily!
Highly recommended, read all of his books for deeper understanding. Thank you Andreas Moritz, my mentor and inspirational guide.

I read a lot but could almost never say a book is life changing but this one really is. The three books by Andreas Moritz that I have read have changedmy way of eating, thinking and personalhabits. Iendeavour to put all his advice into practice because it makes so much sense

He is the author of several books, including War Without Mercy, Cultures of War, and Embracing Defeat, which was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Bancroft Prize, and the Fairbank Prize. He lives in Boston.

If you are a student of 20th century history, you must read this book.

I read three books by Mr. John W. Dower; Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II, War without Mercy: PACIFIC WAR, and this book.

For my personal interest, this book is the most significant one amongst three of his books I read, especially the first chapter which is an excerpt from an essay titled “E.H. Norman, Japan, and the Uses of History”. Just by reading this section of the book, readers will learn the intellectual foundations of Mr. Dower’s interest and understanding of Japanese conflicts in early to mid-20th century.

A book to remember!

These eleven essays present many fascinating insights and a great deal of information about postwar Japan, and can be enjoyed both by readers who already have an extensive knowledge of Japan and by readers whose knowledge is not so extensive. It is a book the reader will not soon forget. Both content and writing style deserve five stars!

Dated but still germane.

This is accessible historiography in the form of a collection of essays dating back to the Vietnam era. Dower is better known for his later book on Japan, Embracing Defeat, but in some ways this volume seems more concise. A fine introduction to some basic cultural aspects of Japanese strategic thought, this book will also provide sarisfaction to the seasoned student of that fascinating and contradictory nation.
