Yes and No

These secrets are so secretive that they are taught in every mainstream business negotiations class in America. Pretty secretive, eh? Having properly derided the excessively puffy title, let me say that the book is good. The book is basically a series of tricks to play on the other negotiator. If you don't, you risk having him/her play them on you.

However, this book is not sufficient in and of itself. G Richard Shell's "Bargaining & Advantage" is needed to get the perspective needed to avoid shooting one's self in the foot -- all the way up to the knee.

On the other hand, Dawson's presentation of the tricks is much more clear and compelling than Shell's. Get 'em both.

A good book to own if you negotiatie only infrequently

I don't have to do high powered negotiations very often but when I do, I review this book. It clearly maps out the process that one must go through to achieve the most successful negotiations possible from the planning stage through the final process of getting the contract language the way you want it. Roger defines success as having both parties feel that they won. He shows how to set up the negotiating process so that both parties come away feeling successful. He explains the psychology of negotiating very clearly so that the reader understands why each thing that they do is important. The value of the book is more than just as a roadmap however. Knowing what techniques that the other party may use (by intent or otherwise) and being able to recognize them is of immense value. What is especially useful if knowing how to handle the tactics that the other side may use. This is not cheating or tricking the other party. It is just being smart. When millions of dollars are on the table both sides are very wary and want to make sure that they are getting what they want. Stumbling when well known negotiating tactics are used by the other party is often avoidable for those that don't negotiate very often. Simply review the book and then follow Roger Dawson's suggestions. I like to listen to the audio version of the book as well when I am coming up to a big negotiation. It gets my mind focused on the process. I then go over what happened after a negotiating session so that the concepts get burned into my memory and the responses become automatic. A great book. Try the audio tapes also. Highly entertaining!

Good Points and Insights

Roger Dawson's SECRET OF POWER NEGOTIATING does not necessarily contain any secrets about negotiations but good points on many and varied aspects of negotiations. The author correctly points out that negotations are simply crucial in life; we are constantly negotiating, whether we realize it or not. I am confident the book would proof useful for anyone interested in enhancing one's understanding of negotations and skills.

The book as a total is organized fairly well, and the author discusses gambits employed in negotiations to techniques used to understand the other side. It is very important to point out that the author believes in "win-win negotiations." That is, it is critical for a negotiator to determine what truly interests the other side and explore how that interest can be met.

A few techniques the author suggests using include but are not limited to:

(1) asking for more than you expect to get, (2) flinch at proposals, (3) play reluctant, (4) use the "vise technique," (5) reference higher authority, (6) never make a concession without the other side reciprocating, and (7) taper down concessions.

It is important to note that the author explores how you should counter such techniques if the other side uses them.

The author also touches on many important additional topics in the book on business, psychology, and other disciplines that relate to negotiations. I found it particularly useful how the author mentioned that the value of services diminish over time. If you are in the service industry, negotiate and settle on a fee prior to delivery/performance.

Power Negotiator

A power negotiator must be prepared to walk-away from any negotiation if it no longer makes sense. Further, the characteristics of the power negotiator include: courage to probe and ask tough questions, patience, integrity (pursue win-win), sound listening skills, a toleration for ambiguity, and no strong need to be liked. The power negotiator believes in a win-win outcome and understands the other side is under pressure. Most importantly perhaps, a power negotiator focuses on issues.

The book covers how to prepare for negotiations, the processes of negotiation, and what to do subsequent a negotiation. The author points out the differences between an impasse (disagreement on a single issue), stalemate (negotiation but not progressing towards an end), and a deadlock (lack of progress lead to frustration and negotiation is not viable). The author also discusses how to resolve each of the above.

The author adequately explains different sources of power that people hold, from legitimate power to charismatic power. Further, the author discusses several negotiating styles, primarily based on assertiveness and emotion. The author goes into depth on their flaws and their strengths. The book also covers the different negotiating styles of different cultures, which I really enjoyed reading.

As a total, I think the book is beneficial and worth reading. I deducted one star because I do not believe the book reads all that well; i.e., there is a lack of flow to the book. However, I hope that does not discourage anyone from reading the book, particularly those whom need to enhance their understanding of negotations, the process, and techniques. I would also like to mention that the author suggests correctly to never gloat subsequent a negotiation. Once a negotiation is consummated, you should always congratulate the other side. Learn the other side's true interests, and always help them fulfill that interest but not necessarily at your expense.

Stranger Than I Imagined!

I recently read the authors "Brandy Of The Damned", I knew a little about the band, and I've read damn near everything Robert Anton Wilson ever wrote, so take this as a RAW fan (musically, I'm more punk/industrial/Detroit techno) perspective.

I found it to be quite amazing, a truly amazing story, solidly grounded in the history of the eras it took place in. I didn't read anything else until I was done.

The only thing I have that is close to criticism is that I think the author may want to read "Debt: The First 5000 Years" (it is by an anthropologist who has been involved with the Occupy movement, the stories we tell ourselves about the history of money are not anything like the truth, read the book!), and then perhaps add a bit to some of the sections on money and the economy.

Recommended, strongly to RAW fans and Discordians everywhere, I'd think everyone else would would like it too, but then why isn't RAW heralded as a great writer, and the Illuminatus trilogy as a great work?

The Whole KLF

The attempt of this book is not just to tell the story of a succesfull pop band, but its really about connecting events and ideas throughout the history of mankind + the KLF in attempt to explain KLF's "burning of a million quid". The author puts together a web of ideas including Carl Jung, Discordians, Doctor Who, the Illumintus, and others that begs to assess the world for what it is. Although it does drag on at some points, this cheap read is worth all the money and will give not just the story of one of the most anarchic band in the music industry but also the philosophy reasoning behind it.

Higgs really captures what's really great about the KLF --- not so much their music (which is interesting and quite good), but more their philosophy, which is striking and fascinating and surprisingly deep. Not to mention, of course, their sense of humour.

About the Author

Bruce Alberts received his PhD from Harvard University and is Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. He is the editor-in-chief of Science magazine. For 12 years he served as President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1993-2005).

Dennis Bray received his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is currently an active emeritus professor at University of Cambridge. In 2006 he was awarded the Microsoft European Science Award.

Karen Hopkin received her PhD in biochemistry from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is a science writer in Somerville, Massachusetts. She is a regular columnist for The Scientist and a contributor to Scientific American's daily podcast, "60-Second Science."

Alexander Johnson received his PhD from Harvard University and is Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Developmental Biology Graduate Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

Julian Lewis received his DPhil from the University of Oxford and is an Emeritus Scientist at the London Research Institute of Cancer Research UK.

Martin Raff received his MD from McGill University and is at the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology and Cell Biology Unit at University College London.

Keith Roberts received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and was Deputy Director of the John Innes Centre, Norwich. He is currently Emeritus Professor at the University of East Anglia.

Peter Walter received his PhD from The Rockefeller University in New York and is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Great textbook, works fine as substitute for 4th edition.

The class I am taking supposedly requires the fourth edition of this book (according to our school bookstore website, that is). However, my professor told the class that the third and fourth editions are pretty much the same aside from some things like page and section numbering, and that we would be able to use either one for the class. If you are looking to save some money and still have basically the same book, then I would highly recommend this one. As far as how the book reads, it seems pretty good for a textbook. It isn't exactly fun to read, but it's relatively easy to follow and there are a lot of good pictures and diagrams. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and would definitely recommend this book.

I was desperately looking for a textbook to cover the Biochemistry and Cell Biology for the GRE Subject Test i am preparing for.

Everyone was praising Alberts' Cell Biology but i found the information a bit advanced.
Cell Biology is a FANTASTIC textbook but it requires prior background on Cell Biology to fully appreciate it and i had none.

Then i found Essential Cell Biology. By the same author, it partners with others in bringing Cell Biology to a wider audience. Reading it is a breeze, it makes you wonder why Cell Biology is considered such a hard topic!
Explanations are straight forward and the movies that come with the DVD are a life saver.

You can easily read and assimilate 10 pages an hour and you don't even know when the time passes.
The only chapters that require more time are "How cells obtain energy from food" and "Electron transport in mitochondria". But this is because of the chemical reactions implied by processes such as citric acid and glycolysis.

Don't get fooled! Essential Cell Biology covers ALL chapters that his big brother Cell Biology includes. It only does it in a simpler and wiser manner.

If you want to get acquainted with Cell Biology this is the book for you!

Another Masterpiece Of Molecular Biology

Alberts team have written and edited a masterful body of work that is an improvement over the last edition which was superb. Everything is discussed well and without unnecessary jargon. The illustrations help to convey the three dimensions of molecular biology and the question bank with the text available online is again well done. The number 5-8 minute videos are what I rely enjoy learning from as with the third edition. For those physicians who need to keep tabs on molecular biology look no further this will get the job well done for you and you will prosper and enjoy its teachings.

It's a general business plan outline, something that you can look up online pretty easily.
Didn't see anything about cannabis while scrolling through the pages (not much information on it if any)

I just made a business plan for a college level class and this book wasn't able to teach me anything new that I hadn't been able to google, on making a generic business plan. It could be helpful for someone who doesn't know where to start. I didn't find it worth anything over a normal internet search.

In a voice often as powerful as the riveting gun he wielded in the 1970s and '80s in a Flint, Mich., General Motors assembly plant, Hamper nails down the excruciating boredom of a shoprat's life on the line. These roughly chronological essays, many published in the local press, bare the rage and humor that, with booze and drugs, friendships and enmities, served to speed along the timeclock's "suffocating minute hand." A fourth-generation factory worker, raised on hard music, hard liquor and soft drugs, given a parochial school education, Hamper was the eldest of eight children deserted by their father, supported by their mother. He was determined not to be an auto worker but soon after high school, married and a father, he needed the steady work GM offered. With free-ranging intelligence and a sharply anarchic sensibility, he tries to figure out and establish some control over his place in GM's massive corporate system. Hamper, a son, a grandson, and a great-grandson of General Motors' "shoprats," chronicles ten years spent in an abusive marriage with GM in Flint, Michigan. Despite exploitative management policies, arrogant and/or incompetent supervisors, and mind-numbing working conditions, Hamper, like the abused spouse who keeps returning to the abuser, becomes de pressed during layoffs and revives when recalled to the assembly line. Hamper copes with his perceived limited options by consuming impressive quantities of alcohol and writing an irreverent, cynically humorous column about shoprat life for an alternative newspaper. How much of Hamper's alienation and later panic disorder are the result of his ten years at GM and how much are due to genetics and choices is unexplored. Another weakness is Hamper's graceless style and his overuse of four-letter words. Despite these shortcomings, blue-collar voices are rarely heard, and therefore this is recommended for public libraries.

Based on his ``Rivethead'' column that has appeared in Midwest newspapers as well as in Mother Jones, here is Hamper's tortured description of his wretched career as a General Motors worker in the factories of Flint, Michigan. A fourth generation ``shoprat'' (one uncle spent 45 years at the Buick Engine Plant), Hamper explains how an irresponsible father, numerous siblings, and his own penchant for laziness, drugs, and taverns pointed directly to a future in the plants, despite his inclinations toward poetry and music. In 1977, he reluctantly began work in the cab shop (a place with a noise level ``like some hideous unrelenting tape loop of trains having sex''). Ranging from this experience to his retirement ten years later, Hamper writes of the drudgery of factory labor; repeated layoffs and call-backs; extensive on-the-job alcohol and drug consumption by himself and fellow workers; ongoing battles with foremen and supervisors; and his quest, similar to that of his mentor, Michael Moore, director of Roger and Me, to go bowling with GM chairman Roger Smith. His ``Rivethead'' series hardly endeared him to management, nor did his often obnoxious behavior. In 1986, at about the time his column first appeared in Mother Jones, he began to experience ``severe panic disorder,'' or anxiety attacks, and has spent the past few years in and out of a mental-health clinic. Although perceptively critical of American business management, practice, and values, Hamper nearsightedly finds little of worth or integrity in his fellow workers, and is downright offensive toward women, who, in his world, ``lust for summer sausage.'' Blue-collar worker

I would have to say the book was enjoyable, creative, but not intellectual by far. There was a lot of dry humor which I didn’t think was amusing and I thought it hindered the thought process of imagining the average blue collar worker. This book was written roughly about the 70’s and 80’s of a man who worked the assembly line for General Motor’s in Flint, Michigan. They called him “Rivethead” which suited his character.

I guess it’s hard for me to think that this person, Ben Hamper and others spent so much time mischievously causing chaos everyday they went to work without any concern about their job, co-workers or management. It was clear that Mr. Hamper’s ambitions went no further then quitting-time, whether it was 10 am, 1 pm, or 3pm. Him and his buddies would drink on the job, some did drugs and the management sometimes gave out warnings but mostly looked the other way because the workers would harassed them intensely. All their effort went into booze, drugs, and rock and roll music prominently in the lives of these men in the 70’s.

Most of the men wanted to get their thirty years in for their pension but in this time of auto making it was off, collecting unemployment and on the job working when the economy permitted. So, it was going to take years to be able to get that pension. I felt like it was a catch twenty-two situation for them so maybe their behaviors were warranted. Combinations of daily repetitious routine, lack of a clear sense of purpose, and guiltless self-destructive habits can make thirty years seem like an eternity. However, the life of Ben Hamper seemed like an endemic of downright insanity….His motto was, “to work less, make more money, and spend it all on booze and music“. The motto was the hard labor he did day to day.

Ben Hamper wrote an excellent description of the assembly line and American automobile industry but it was shocking to read how the workers behaved. However, this is only one man’s description of the blue collar job but there were plenty of reviews that agreed with his definition of the management and auto-workers at General Motors at that time. The umpteen stories, comical events, bad behaviors, and working on the assembly line kept the lives of these men surviving in order to receive their pay-checks. Yet, I have to say the authenticity to the blue collar voice Ben sometimes sounded like a fair stand-up comic with the intent of keeping the readers laughing through dry-irony and wisdom.

I also worked in a shoe factory for years in the 70’s and 80’s and I was on an assembly line; paid by piece-work and made good money, became one of the top stitcher’s, and created quality work. My co-workers and I had plenty of fun and laughter but we respected others and the company. I guess some men might have been friskier and thought a job is something you make the best of…and they did!!

Painfully Entertaining

I am about ten years younger than the author and we shared so many similarities in life it is spooky. I entered the service in the early eighties and worked a very similar low end existence on an isolated duty station. The book portrays in depth what young men will sometimes due to alleviate the boredom of a spiritually unfulfilling job. The massive drinking on and off the job, the foolish and immature pranks and games, the scheming, the conflicts, and the friendships that develop among those who toil together. The problem I have with the book is that Ben Hamper never followed the course of natural evolution and progressed outside that childish mode. He suffered from a state of arrested development. As the writer we expect that the observer would have greater incite into the overall experience and not simply be narrowly focused on the small percentage of people lack the ability to evolve over time. The character arc is missing and we are stuck following rivet head to the bleak demise of his own volition. Another curious aspect of this book is what he chose not to include. I thought he might have been gay because he fails to mention any desire for companionship other than the ones he had with men at work. That theory was proven false when he briefly mentions some girl friends later in the book. He also makes it clear his father was disappointing but then mentions he has a daughter who is never given any consideration through out the book. Did he never speak to her and thus repeat the same childhood he had? This entire book seem like nothing more than a catalog of drunken GM worker stories rather than that of a man's life story. I shall not end on a negative note and should mention his style was entertaining and his humor often very on target. In the end I am glad I read it but am left somewhat unsatisfied.

Great book for the car nut in your life - entertaining.

Funny, not as scary as Savage Factory, this is about the shenanigans inside a U.S. pickup truck factory. It's a great gift for the car nut in your life. Ben was a writer for a local paper in Flint at one time and worked with Michael Moore also. I hear that this may become a movie. He's got a radio show in Traverse City now.
