Different numerical techniques are described in detail and where possible simple examples are included, as well as test results for more complicated problems. The book consists of six chapters. British Intel from D-Day to VE-Day

This is again an excellent review of what the British intel knew prior to D-Day and through the end of the war. Of course, at this point they were 5 years into the war so they had a much better handle on things than in 1939 and 1940 (see Volume 1). The book covers the good, the bad and the uncertain. As usual, intel sources came up with a variety of different estimates of things such as the V-Weapon program of Germany. It was interesting to know that some significant intel came from diplomatic sources. This is the first volume that I can remember addressing the German A-Bomb effort (which wasn't much). It is not nearly as thorough as Alsos, but it is something. There is a lot today that can be learned from what happened in the past (and what was not done). The British are excellent at thorough documentation, and this is a great source.

A Little Bit of Christmas Magic in Chesapeake Shores...

Well, it's that wonderful time of year when authors we know and love give us their stories of love and romance, all wrapped up in a Christmas bow!
A Seaside Christmas by Sherryl Woods was the one I chose to read first because I can usually count on this author to give us a holiday romance to remember.

Jenny Collins has a lot going on in her life. She is a songwriter with a very successful career in Nashville, her mother has remarried and Jenny has a little brother she barely knows and the love of her life, Caleb Green was caught out with another woman and then went into rehab. For the last year, Jenny has been trying to heal her broken heart and convince herself that it's way past time she return home to Chesapeake Shores and make peace with her mother's new life by mending fences with her step-father and getting to know her little brother. So she packs her bags to come home for the holiday and agrees to help her best friend Bree with the Christmas production she is working on. Just as Jenny starts to relax, who should show up at the theater but Caleb, and he's on a mission to win Jenny back.

Caleb knows all the mistakes he's made and the biggest one by far was losing Jenny. But he's right when he figures she won't want anything to do with him. He also knows that he is going to have to convince Jenny's very large, very protective family of O'Briens that he's sorry he broke Jenny's heart and that all he wants is a second chance to prove how much he really loves her. After his first day in town, he quickly realizes that this is not going to be easy and he definitely has his work cut out for him. Being the huge country star that he is, Bree can't resist asking him to participate in the show and before she knows it, Jenny begins to weaken her resolve as Caleb works hard to prove himself. Can she really ever trust him again? Can she take the risk of another broken heart? And can she work all this out under the watchful eyes of not only her family, but the entire town?

A Seaside Christmas is a nice little story that takes place during the season of magic and it includes characters we know and love from Woods' long standing Chesapeake Shores series. Jenny spends a large part of the book trying to figure out all the relationships in her life and it wasn't long before I wished she would just let go of the past and look ahead to the future. But when push comes to shove, Caleb, with some help from a wee bit of Christmas magic turns this holiday season into one that Jenny will never forget. A sweet romance with characters I enjoyed getting to know.

n this installment of the series, Jenny Collins returns to Chesepeake Shores for the holiday season to help a family member with her annual Christmas play. She is also running away from Nashville, where she is a celebrated songwriter, trying to escape from the publicity caused by her very public breakup with Country superstar Caleb Green.

For me, a romance book has to have something other than just the romance to entice me. In the case of this book, there were several things that fit that bill. First of all, the characters in Sherryl Woods O'Brian series, if this book is any indication, encompass just he right mix of compassion, family loyalty, and pragmatism, yet they aren't at all one dimensional. Also, as a Country music fan, the country music backdrop was definitely a plus. I found myself through out the book associating both Jenny and Caleb with my favorite Country stars. Last, I loved the whole focus on the Christmas musical. I am a sucker for musicals AND Christmas musicals in particular. The fact that the author referenced all my favorite Christmas movies was not lost on me. By the time the book was finished, I not only wanted to go to Broadway and see the play, but I wanted to dig out all of my faves, White Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, etc. and watch one after the other.

After reading this book, I have decided that I need to go back and read the other books in the series. I really want to get to know all of the O'Brians better. If the book can do that to me, I am sure it will do the same for other readers. That, in my mind, makes it a huge success.

Christmas with the family on the shore

A Seaside Christmas by Sherryl Woods
This family saga is about Jenny Collins=her mom went and married the elder O'Brien and they had a son. She just didn't fit in but her aunt Bree talked her into coming back after years of trying other things: college and songwriting in Nashville. She had broken up a year ago with Caleb Green.
This book also follows Caleb and his life in Nashville, listening to others sing Jennie's songs. He wants to buy that song and will go to Chesapeake Shores and talk to her-something he hadn't done when they broke up.
In town everybody in the family is trying to get Jenny on board to attend the welcome home party and to make amends with her mother... She's also working with Bree on the Christmas play songs. Caleb hits town to apologize to Jenny...
Dillon, another local guy she used to play music with is divorced and wants to date her. Super surprise what her mom and step-dad give her when she's back in town, it's so perfect.
To help Bree and her new production company they agree to work together so she'll have a really good season.
Love catching up with all the families and especially during the holiday season.
Caleb's idea to decorate her yard with decorations-he gets the go ahead by Bree who in turn sends all the males to the house to help complete the job. They hope she appreciates and likes it especially the special piece he found.
He wins the males over with the lure of a benefit concert for their land and preservation ideas...
Jenny listens to how he's changed and she's seen it for herself but she has some doubts he will go back to his bad ole self ... and he does have the part where he kisses the older female in the play...til she finds out another reason he came to town...

So disappointing!

Disappointment set in immediately when I started using this book, and it grew as I progressed through it. First, the back cover promises a companion website with audio recordings of the short dialogues that accompany each of the 19 lessons, but the website is non-existent. Yale Press told me some other site (?) would be up and running in four weeks (!). Why do they release the book before the audio portion is available, and why in the world would it take that long to prepare the site?

Second, the presentation is not particularly useful and is riddled with type-o's (in both the English and the Arabic text!). Only very seldom are the specific vowels of Levantine marked--to contrast with the vowels of MSA--so unless you have a teacher or tutor telling you how the Levantine words are pronounced, most users will be at an almost total loss. The numerous type-o's are mostly just annoying, but if you don't already know these new words, a type-o can be a real problem (and I'm not talking about the odd colloquial Lebanese spellings).

Third, the coverage is, to put it mildly, shallow. Perhaps the promised elementary and advanced books will offer more depth and texture, but I was able to jot down all of the new words and grammar rules on TWO sheets of paper from this 220-page book. The exercises were nice, and the material that IS presented was relatively useful, but it lacked a lot of the texture and explanation that is really essential for the transition from MSA to Levatine. I was particularly excited to see this new book on Levantine Arabic, since my focus has been on the spoken Arabic of Syria and Jordan, and the back cover suggests that it focuses on "the language and culture of Syria and Lebanon in particular." As it turned out, however, this book's thin coverage focuses almost exclusively on Lebanese, not Syrian (though there certainly are communties in Syria that would use the words in this book, the Damascus dialect is quite different from much of the vocabulary and grammar in this book).

Perhaps I'm just spoiled, because I started with what has proven to be HANDS DOWN the two best sources for learning Levantine Arabic: (1) Syrian Colloquial Arabic, available only as a .pdf online download, with almost 400 pages of densely packed, carefully and attractively presented material and hours of immediately available MP3 audio recordings, and (2) Munther Younes's materials on MSA and Jordanian (Living Arabic, over 500 pages, available on Amazon with DVD video and CD audio, along with the intermediate version of that book, curently under revision). Any solo student or teacher interested in expanding into the spoken varieties of Arabic would be MUCH better served with either of these other programs than with Shou fi ma fi.

Moreover, this might be just piling on, but this book includes a good bit of what might be called abusive language, useful only in serious fights and arguments. I found this to be odd, as one would hope people preparing to use the spoken variety of Arabic would be more inclined toward friendly dialogue rather than fighting. I hope this is not a reflection of what the students at West Point are learning from Chouairi in their Arabic classes--his focus on humor is much more welcome. Why not include lists of foods or furniture or household items (as the other two books mentioned above do)?

And as if all of this weren't bad enough, this 220-page paperback is very expensive. I expected substantial value for the elevated pricetag, and as this review indicates, I was sorely disappointed. Both Syrian Colloquial and Living Arabic are MUCH better values for your money, AND they offer far better substance. The peer reviewers of Shou fi ma fi were obviously quite kind in their evaluations of this book, though Chouairi and his readers would have been much better served by a bit more rigor in these pre-release reviews.

OK Levantine Grammar and Vocab but terrible audio

This book is okay particularly given that the resources for studying Levantine Arabic are few. The major problem with this book is the audio. There are two issues. First, there is only one clip per chapter. The clips are also extremely short. Together, there is not enough listening practice time. Second, half of the audio is completely in-audible, it is either too quiet or the poor quality "fuzzes" the sound (it seems they tried to compress the audio for download and it reduced sound quality). Trust me, this is not simply my difficulty understanding the dialect as words roll together. The quality is bad. As those of you trying to study Levantine know, listening and speaking are key to learning the dialect and if you can't hear the audio that accompanies the book this is a major problem.

There are three good things about this book though which is why I am giving it three stars instead of two. First, there is good cultural knowledge to include foods and manners. This is obviously very important as students of dialect intends to spend time talking to people. These will also help you understand some of the distinctly Levantine sayings you'll find in a social setting. Second, the exercises are good and make you practice what you learned with realistic sentences. It would be much better if there were also answers for self study, but they are decent as is. Third, the book is very thin and light which makes it easy to carry around to study in your spare time.

All in all, the book is OK. However, it is not worth the price overall unless you have no other resources. Before buying this book, I would definitely look at GLOSS on DLI first and see if this free resource meets your needs. There are many more audio clips with grammar explanations, exercises, and translations.

In case the publisher sees this review, please fix the quality of the audio. It would make the book SO much better.....

good....my lebanese language tutor loves it.

Good book. Ijust wish that it came with an actual cd. There is an accompanying audio to the book on line but it can't be downloaded. I wish it was able to be either downloaded ot the the book came with a audio cd. Will I ever buy from this author again, yes because my tutor loves it and I did learn much of the lebanese dialect from it.
